Information on German language proficiency tests
International applicants wishing to study on a German-language degree programme must provide evidence of sufficient German language proficiency before enrolment and before commencing their degree programme.
To enrol in the degree programme, proof of having passed the ‘German Language Examination for University Admission of Foreign Applicants’ (DSH) with a minimum result of ‘DSH-2’ is required. DSH examinations taken at other universities are accepted provided that the relevant DSH examination regulations are registered with the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). (See‘Registration of DSH Examination Regulations’.)
To sit the DSH in Wuppertal, applicants must have been admitted to a degree programme and provide evidence of German language proficiency at least at level C1 of the ‘Common European Framework of Reference for Languages’ (CEFR).
The DSH examination is offered by the Sprachlehrinstitut (SLI) twice a year (March and September). A fee of €150. Further information can be found on the Sprachlehrinstitut (SLI) website.
You are exempt from the DSH requirement if you hold the ‘Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz Stufe II’, the ‘Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung’ (C2), the Goethe-Institut’s ‘Großes’ or ‘Kleines Sprachdiplom’, the TestDaF with a minimum level of 4 in all sections, the ‘telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule’ examination, a German-language school-leaving qualification equivalent to a German university entrance qualification, or have passed the ‘German’ section of the assessment examination.
Everything you need to know about the TestDaF
If you have already registered for or taken a DSH, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule or TestDaF exam, but have not received your certificate by the end of the late submission period, you may upload your registration or attendance certificate to uni-assist or submit it to the international student administration office by the end of the late submission period (31 January or 31 July) at the latest. You will then be given the opportunity to submit the certificate by the end of the enrolment deadline. This does not apply to the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Psychology and Architecture, nor to the Master’s degree programme in Childhood, Youth and Social Affairs. In these cases, you cannot apply for the preparatory German language course at the same time.
In the following cases, you may be exempted from providing proof of the DSH by our Language Teaching Institute, whereby your language skills will be assessed in an interview conducted by the Institute:
- Declaration in the uni-assist self-assessment form that German is your mother tongue
- German nationality
- Incomplete secondary education at a German-speaking school
- Realschule certificate from Germany or completion of Year 9 at a German school abroad
- Vocational training in Germany
- Completed a German-language degree programme at a foreign university
- Completed degree in German Studies
- At least two semesters of study at a German university on a German-language degree programme, with successfully completed coursework
The following language certificates entitle the holder to sit the DSH-2 examination at BUW; upon passing this, the student may commence their degree programme:
- DSH 1 or proof of having failed the DSH
- TestDaF with a result of 2x3 and 2x4
- C1 certificate
The University of Wuppertal offers prospective students whose first language is not German – who are applying for admission to a degree programme at the university, hold a qualification entitling them to enter higher education, but have no or insufficient knowledge of German – the opportunity to take part in preparatory German language courses. A fee of 500.00 euros per semester is charged for participation. For applicants with ‘registered refugee’ residence status, the International Centre will cover these costs under certain conditions. If the requirements have not been met by the time the German course ends, the fee must be paid by the German course participant to the International Centre.
Participants in the preparatory German course may be enrolled at the University of Wuppertal for a maximum of three semesters. As ‘students’ on the German course, they are required to have private health insurance cover. In addition to the German course fee, the standard semester fee, which includes the semester ticket, must be paid.
German courses are offered at levels A2 to C1. German language skills at level A1 can be acquired through an online self-study course. Placement in a course level is determined by the result of a placement test. The German courses run throughout the year, comprising 38 teaching weeks and approximately 18 hours of lessons per week. The school holidays follow the calendar for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The German course concludes with the C1 final examination, which is a prerequisite for sitting the DSH exam in Wuppertal.
