Health Insurance

Every student is obliged to have a German statutory or private health insurance (such as Mawista or Provisit) for the enrolment. Since January 1st 2022 it is also necessary to request the electronic transmission of your current health insurance certificate or your exemption from statutory insurance (if privately insured) from the statutory health insurance company. If you have contracted a private health insurance, you also submit the insurance confirmation together with your enrolment documents.

Since the electronic transmission of the insurance status must have already taken place at the time of enrolment at Bergische Universität Wuppertal, you should do this immediately after receiving your acceptance letter.

Thus, written insurance certificates are no longer required at the time of enrolment. The presentation of an insurance certificate from the private health insurance company or an insurance card will NOT be accepted as proof of insurance.

Private health insurance for German course participants

Participants in preparatory German courses cannot take out insurance with a statutory health insurance company, but must take out insurance with a private German health insurance company before enrolling. There are special low-cost private health insurances for this purpose, such as Mawista or Provisit.

The insurance certificate from the private health insurance company must be presented at the time of enrolment. After successful completion of the German course, you can then insure yourself with a statutory health insurance company (see above) for your specialised studies.
